TinyMenu: Menu icon not displayed

Reported by: adam@alphapapa.net Assigned to: t-bone
Priority: minor Component: Tiny Menu
Version: 1.4.1 Severity: Nuisance

Description

I'm using TinyMenu 1.4.1 with Firefox 2.0.0.1 (Debian Iceweasel package). I tried selecting both a PNG and SVG image for the menu icon, but all I get is a completely blank button.

When I tried to attach the SVG as the third file, Trac said, "Submission rejected as potential spam (Maximum number of external links per post exceeded, Akismet says content is spam)".

Yes, spam is an unfortunate reality. I had to install filters after it started coming in droves. Just the other day, I deleted at least 50 spams that it caught. Since SVG is text (XML) based, and there were multiple URL formatted "links" to various namespace definitions, it decided you were linking and it didn't like that.

Anyway, the actual bug: You're using images that are far far too big. You should aim for something in the range of max 32w x 16h pixels, or so. Something that would fit in the space that the word "Menu" does currently (if you use the English language version).

That said, those images work for me on Windows. I only see that part (about 32x16) of the image that actually fits inside the menu item displaying, but as I suspected, it's set to center the image within it, and the middle of the image does have something showing.

I'm wondering if it has something to do with the Debian build ... Do you know if there's a livecd I can run that will get me a running copy of Debian with Firefox 2.0?

I know those images are large, but when I used to use Compact Menu, the PNG worked well even at that size; it looked pretty cool. I haven't bothered to tweak the images yet since I haven't gotten the feature to work yet. :)

I don't know of such a liveCD off the top of my head. Perhaps an Ubuntu liveCD would get you pretty close, or you could boot a recent Knoppix CD and then upgrade Firefox within Knoppix (I've done that before, so I know it works).

I doubt it's a problem with Debian, since I have 46 other active extensions and they all work fine. But I suppose we can't rule anything out right now.

BTW, I just installed the extension into a clean profile and tried to set it to that PNG image, but I still get an empty box.

Does the new Tiny Menu 1.4.2 help with this?

I was able to reproduce this with a debian based livecd that I just happened to hear about (serendipity!) called dreamlinux. It came with FF 1.5, which worked OK. But, I downloaded FF 2, and it did just what you said!

I installed the new XPI, and, well, this is strange. The first Iceweasel window opens with a blank button, as before. But if I open a new Iceweasel window, even with Tiny Menu set to use a PNG image, the button displays the text "Menu".

I haven't found a lot of time to check into this. If you find some it would be valuable to try reproducing this problem:

  • In a [BlankProfile]. Is another extension or custom theme interfering?
  • In an official Firefox build (instead of IceWeasel). Should be able to download, extract, and run with no install step. But be careful of your profile.

Is the problem solved in either or both of those situations?

Ah I did find some time. There was a small bug in 1.4.2 that I didn't catch because of how I was set up already as I was doing development. Could you re-download 1.4.2 (I've uploaded an updated file, still that version as it hasn't been "released" yet) and tell me how that goes?

Hooray, it's working now! Thank you!

By the way, changing the image takes effect immediately for me. Cool! :)

I have the same problem: Installed Tiny Menu (and now upgraded to 1.4.4, w/o change of problem) I replaced the "text" button with a picture. When I reversed back to "text" the button became blank. In the Blankprofile I see the text on the button (Menu). What do I need to change in my other profiles to return to the text button w/ text?

Default menu image is not displayed in upcoming Firefox 2.0.0.12. Menu text displays fines however. Tried on 2.0.0.12 RC1. The default menu image works fine on 2.0.0.11. Using menu text on 2.0.0.12 RC1 for now. Thought I'd let you know, before 2.0.0.12 final is released(which is probably very soon since it reached RC1) and you get a bunch of complaints :)

Same Problem on 2.0.0.12 RC4, Tested with new profile. This applies only to 1.4.4 since 1.1 Vanilla doesn't support menu images.
